Samurai Jack Season 5 Episode 3 Review (Spoilers)
Robert Knuckles
“The decisions you make and the actions that follow are a reflection of who you are. You cannot hide from yourself.”
It feels like it's been forever since the last time I did this. A week feels like a month. So enough about me let’s get on with last night’s episode.
We start off this episode with Jack floating across the river. Blood is just everywhere once again seeing the Adult Swim essence. Jack is still badly injured from his fight with the daughters of Aku. Jack does manage to get on his feet walking around the woods trying to find shelter while he’s walking he once again sees the horseman. We still have no answers on what that’s about. Jack manages to find a small cave to recover. He pulls the dagger out of his stomach and drops unconscious.
Jack starts hallucinating seeing his younger self again or some call it his conscious this time with piranha teeth which made it very disturbing. He tells him you actually killed a human being real flesh blood with a disturbing smile. What happens when the others find you? Will you be able to kill them? Maybe they will kill you. Or is that what you want? The time will come when Jack has to make that decision.
Jack hears footsteps heading toward him getting ready to attack but we see the wolf from last week's episode who appears to be alive. We could only guess that since Jack is alive the wolf would be alive. Jack doesn’t attack but falls back to sleep. We flashback to a younger Jack with his parents. They get ambushed by a bunch of assassins. Jack’s dad goes out to face the assassins and says “Leave now and live or stay and face your destiny.” The assassins didn’t listen and Jack’s dad kills them with the younger Jack watching and gets blood over his face.
Jack wakes up and stitches his wound falls asleep (again) and wakes up with the wolf giving him food. You see the mutual understanding between the two and quite possibly a bond. The both are fully recovered the wolf runs off and we see another flashback of younger Jack with his dad saying to him “The decisions you make and the actions that follow are a reflection of who you are. You cannot hide from yourself.”
The daughters of Aku get out of the ruins carrying their dead sister. The girls showed no remorse for their dead sister. They only said death is failure. The daughters followed Jack’s blood leading them to the forest and we see a very important scene when the daughters see a deer (they didn’t what it was). Then they see a male deer whom at first believed it was Aku’s minion because of his antlers. The two deer start showing affection towards each other and daughters of Aku didn’t know what they were doing and they didn’t like it. This just shows once again their childhood being taking away from them. The daughters see more blood and follow the trail getting out their weapons preparing to attack.
Once the trail ends it starts snowing making it the perfect setting. Jack starts talking to them using his father's same words. “Leave now and live or stay and face your destiny. The decisions you make and the actions that follow are a reflection of who you really are. You cannot hide from yourself.”
It’s quite for a few seconds then Jack comes out from beneath the snow stabs through the one daughter with a spear killing her and throwing another spear killing the other daughter. I’m literally like “HOLY S***!!!” Jack basically went the tarzan on those two girls. He runs off and the snow clears and we got a fight going on. Jack was holding his own very well. He counters one of the daughters attack with his arm and throws a small sword at her thus killing her. We see the last three daughters combine together to change their style almost like a spider and attack all at once. It appeared too much for Jack but like always he found a way to stop their attack.
Jack and the daughters run to the edge of a tree branch. He throws his weapon down the abyss. Jack throws the one daughter off the cliff and punches the other daughter. It looked she twisted her neck when Jack punched her but regardless she falls unconscious. Now the final daughter throws her weapon at Jack. He counters by having the weapon wrap around his risk. Both jump off the tree branch wrapping the weapon on the branch. Jack kicks the daughter and lands on top of the branch. The daughter's mask falls off revealing it to be Ashi. She is seen hanging on her weapon yelling at Jack “You will die!!” Jack drops Ashi’s weapons making her fall into the abyss. Jack is relieved but the branch gets weaker and breaks causing Jack to fall into the abyss to thus ending the episode.
Overall I thought this was a decent episode. It started off slow for me at the start with Jack recovering and all. His younger self was disturbing talking about killing another human but it definitely fit the scene. Now I really thought it was cool having Jack using his father's words. Jack already killed someone and he can’t hide from it. He already made that decision of killing another human being. This didn’t break Jack. I think using his father's words helped him. If Jack didn’t use his father's words who knows what could’ve happened. The action was great. Jack killing those girls man... lord have mercy. He wasn’t playing around. Jack is a straight bada**. Now for the daughters of Aku the first two that fell off the tree I think they are dead but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are still alive because yea you see them fall but didn’t see them ACTUALLY DIE. Now we definitely know that four are actually dead. I think Ashi is still alive. We see her falling too but I just don’t see her dying so fast in the series. I still believe she’ll play a huge role in this final season. Let me know what you guys think of this episode in the comments below.
